The iOS Mail app is horrible at discerning which are important (from real people I know or critical alerts, such as banks, airlines etc.) and the bazillions of marketing emails. Google did change how Gmail is pushed. Previously they used Microsoft’s Exchange protocol, but later changed to their own push protocol.
